Week 5 - 30th Nov - 4th Dec

This week in Literacy, we will begin a new story called 'Dougal's Deep Sea Diary' by Simon Bartram. First, we will look at the introduction page and discuss who we think the main character is and why. We will then make predictions about what Dougal is about to become. We will then explore some of the scenes from Dougal's diving adventures and write statement sentences, describing what we can see using adjectives. We will discuss what a diary is and what information Dougal is writing in his. We will then pretend to be Dougal and create some of our own statement sentences, describing what we can see, hear and feel underwater.

For all of our writing we will focus on the sounds we can hear in each word and use our phonic knowledge to write them down. We will also think about using finger spaces between each word and ending our sentences with full stops.

Week 4 - 23rd - 27th November

This week in Literacy, we will continue to explore our picture book 'Flotsam' by David Wiesner. We will remind ourselves that the term 'flotsam' refers to objects that have been washed up from a shipwreck, and look at some 'flotsam' that has been collected by our teachers. We will discuss whether the flotsam looks new or old and give reasons why. We will also discuss who we think the flotsam belongs to and give reasons for our ideas. We will then write our thoughts down using the appropriate challenge templates found below.

For all of our writing we will focus on the sounds we can hear in each word and use our phonic knowledge to write them down. We will also think about using finger spaces between each word and ending our sentences with full stops.

Have a look at pictures of the 'flotsam' we will be exploring this week below.

Week 3 - 16th - 20th November

This week in Literacy, we will be looking at the fabulous picture book 'Flotsam' by David Wiesner. We will learn that the term 'flotsam' refers to objects that have been washed up from a shipwreck. We will then look at some of the flotsam gathered by the young boy and make predictions as to whom the items belong. After the boy has discovered the camera, we will write statement sentences predicting what we believe the boy has seen in the developed photos. We will then continue to explore our story and discover the developed photos from the underwater camera. We will use adjectives to describe what we see in the photos and write statement sentences about these e.g. A blue octopus is sitting on a flowery sofa.

For all of our writing we will focus on the sounds we can hear in each word and use our phonic knowledge to write them down. We will also think about using finger spaces between each word and ending our sentences with full stops.

Week 2 - 9th - 13th Nov

This week in Literacy, we will be reading 'At the beach; postcards from Crabby Spit', by Roland Harvey.

We will be using our geography knowledge to discuss what we might find at the beach. We will learn what a statement sentence is, then write statement sentences for things we can see at 'Crabby Spit'. We will then think about postcards; what they are, who writes them, when they are written and what they tell us. At the end of the week, we will be writing our own postcards from the beach. For all of our writing, we will focus on the sounds we can hear in each word and use our phonic knowledge to write them down. We will also think about using finger spaces between each word in our sentences.
