PSHE and SMSC Curriculum Intent Statement

(Personal, Social and Health Education / Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education)

At Faringdon Infant School, the PSHE and SMSC curriculum is designed to provide our pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within our community. Our pupils learn to understand and respect each other, our diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. They are encouraged to take part in a wide range of rich and meaningful first hand experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of our school and our local community.

In doing so, pupils at Faringdon Infant School learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences through the use of early language skills and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. This mindful approach to PSHE & SMSC is delivered through the JIGSAW scheme of work and is embedded through our Learning Muscles; a set of desirable learning behaviours which equip children to become inspired, excited and motivated learners

JIGSAW is the scheme of work we use in school to help your children grow their personal development, social skills, and understanding of healthy life choices, including mental health. Jigsaw allows us to ensure that children have time to reflect, manage their behaviour and emotions, learn about relationships and respect for themselves and others, as well as how to keep themselves safe.

Our aim is to help children to understand who they are, be healthy, happy and good, caring people.

You can see further information about the scheme by following the links below.

You will find information on what PSHE education is all about, what the JIGSAW approach is about and how it works in our school.

You will also find the main content of the curriculum for each year group and how this links to our promotion of British values.

How Online Safety Education is Delivered Alongside our Jigsaw PSHE Work

The Online Safety Long Term Plan is linked to our Jigsaw PSHE work to ensure consistency in teaching themes - for example Online Bullying is taught in Term 2 when the Jigsaw unit of work Celebrating Difference which explores Bullying is taught just as the online safety Health and Wellbeing unit is taught in Term 4 at the same time as the Jigsaw Healthy Me unit.

This is our LEARNING CHARTER which was drawn up by all the children during their JIGSAW lessons. The charter explains what we need to help us to learn at Faringdon Infant School.
