Writing

In writing, Year 1 children practise correct letter formation by learning letter 'families' such as 'curly caterpillar' letters, 'one armed robot' letters and 'long ladder' letters. They are taught to write both statement sentences and question sentences, using finger spaces and capital letters consistently, and full stops and question marks as appropriate. They will use their phonic knowledge to spell unknown words, but learn the correct spelling of set Common Exception words. By the end of the year, they will use adjectives to improve their sentences and write short narrative and non-fiction pieces.

Use the documents below to practise both handwriting and spelling, and find interactive games in the links underneath. Find out about the texts Year 1 will be reading each week, and ideas to support narrative and non-fiction writing, in the termly stars on the main home learning page.
