Science at home

Hello to all our children and families. We are missing you all at school! We hope you are keeping healthy, active and safe, taking the opportunity to spend quality time together at home. Below are some simple science experiments you can carry out at home together. Each one includes an explanation of the science behind the experiment which allows you to explain to your children what is happening. Remember to ask lots of questions; What is happening? What can you see? Do you know why this is happening? HAVE FUN TOGETHER.

Home Learning Support - Maths

Reminder - Maths doesn't always need to be written down or completed on worksheets. Maths can be great FUN! Play some of these games together to practise number facts in a family fun way. The quicker the recall, the easier calculations will become. Purple Mash also has some really enjoyable online Maths games to play - some have even been set as 2dos! Don't forget to also check out the White Rose resources posted below for weekly Maths lessons.

Strategies for what to do when children don't know how to spell or read a word

When the children are in school we encourage them to use the following strategies to help them spell or read unfamiliar words. These are strategies you can continue to use at home to encourage your child to have a go. There are PDF versions of the posters that you can download and put up at home too.

Home learning - Maths

As a school we use the White Rose Scheme of Learning for Maths lessons. To support children and families during school closures the White Rose Maths Team have prepared a series of five maths lessons per week for each year group. Every lesson comes with a short video showing you clearly and simply how to help your child to complete the activity successfully. We hope that you will find this resource helpful. The link for the website is below. 

Current advice is for you and your family to exercise OUTSIDE of the home ONCE A DAY ONLY.

Keeping Active!

Whilst many of us are staying at home, we must remember to keep ourselves moving and be active! There are a few ways you can do this with your children. In school we have been using super movers, go noodle, cosmic yoga and for sports relief Joe Wicks Workout! Your children have thoroughly enjoyed these in school and we hope you can continue this at home. Joe Wicks is also doing a daily PE session Monday to Friday at 9am live on you tube. These can be done anytime of the day. Have fun whilst keeping active :)

Home learning support

There are a number of things you can do with your child at home to support them in reaching their targets for the end of this year. This includes reading with them daily, discussing books, practising spellings and recalling number facts. Below we have attached some helpful documents with word lists and suggestions of activities to support you and your child with their home learning. We hope you find this helpful!

Some more science experiments!

For those families either at home already or for those who enjoy having fun with science at home... below are some more experiments that you could share with your children. There are also some prompt cards/questions that you could use to encourage your children to think scientifically whilst enjoying the experiments! More importantly, spend time together and enjoy learning together!

Family Science Evening

It was fantastic to see so many of our families attend Science Evening recently. We really were overwhelmed with the response we had on the night and we hope to run similar events in the future. It was a great atmosphere in school and we all thoroughly enjoyed working with you and your children. It would not have been possible without the help from Miss Dickenson, Miss Copley and Mr Hale from FCC Science Department so a huge thank you must go to them. Miss Beale also played a key role in the organisation of the evening so a huge thank you must also go to her! And of course not forgetting a HUGE thank you to Mrs Forbes for the idea, support, organisation and for making it all come together.

As requested, the instructions for the experiments are below so you can continue to enjoy these at home with your children.

British Science Week

This week have celebrated British Science Week. The theme this year is 'Our Diverse Planet'. We began by discussing what is meant by 'diverse'. We explored how all things on our planet are diverse from people to places to animals and materials. We discussed what makes these diverse - people: race, gender, language, age, culture. Animals: species/types. Places: landscapes - icy, deserts, jungle. Materials: wood, metal, plastic, fabric etc. Next we talked about camouflage  - we looked at which animals camouflage and why. Please ask your children questions about this. Finally, children designed a butterfly to camouflage somewhere in the classroom. Have a look and see if you can spot their camouflaged butterflies!

World Book Day

What a fantastic world book day! It was lovely to see children dressed up as characters from all types of stories. We started our day with an assembly all about world book day. We discussed why we have a world book day, who is celebrating it and how we are celebrating it at our school. We shared books with our friends, wrote book reviews and talked lots about our favourite books, characters and why these are our favourite. Throughout the day, Mr Jones, Miss Mcaleer and Miss Beale took it in turns to read one of their favourite stories to each class.

Science WOW Day - Materials (26-2-20)

What a super day was had by all! Today, we had fun investigating materials in different ways. Throughout the day we had the opportunity to work in each class. In Willow, we were making parachutes from various materials. Each group was given a different material to use and then we had the opportunity to test our parachutes to see which worked the best. We investigated using foil, paper, card, fabric and plastic. In Cherry, we were exploring the best way to rescue a Lego Man from a block of ice! Children came up with a variety of ways in their groups including warm water, smashing it out, using a variety of tools and wrapping the ice block in a towel. We had A LOT of fun testing and trying to rescue the Lego Man. Finally in Maple, we were investigating solids and liquids. We looked and discussed which materials could be changed from solids to liquids and back to solids. Children came up with lots of ideas - 'ice, ice-cream and chocolate'. We also learnt some new vocabulary: reversible and irreversible! Please ask your children if they can remember what these mean. We then investigated melting chocolate in warm water and returning it back to a solid. We were fascinated! 

ICT - Fun with Bee Bots

This week in ICT children have been learning about algorithms and how they are used to give instructions. We have had fun exploring how to input instructions using Bee Bots, as well as using the Bee Bot app on the iPad.

Term 4 - Marvellous Mexico

This term we are continuing our research on Mexico. We will be looking at this country and its culture in more detail, and will even have a traditional Mexican fiesta for our Fantastic Finish. Find out more about everything else we will be learning in our overview below.

Maths - Division

This week we have been learning how to solve division problems using different strategies. First we learnt how to share numbers into equal groups, then we used the strategy of putting objects 'in groups of...'. With both strategies we know that there must be the SAME number in each group! Here are some examples of our practical work. 

WOW Day!

Last week, we kicked off our topic - Marvellous Mexico - with a WOW day all about the Mayans. We discovered which parts of Mexico and Central America the Mayans lived, and learnt about their culture and beliefs. Did you know they had over 190 Gods?! We tried traditional Mayan food and drink including tortillas, guacamole, chocolate chicken and spicy hot chocolate, and even played a game of pok-ta-pok. We learnt that the most important Mayans had the biggest headdresses, and made some of our own. Can you see who is the most important in each class?

Term 3

This term our topic focus will be Marvellous Mexico.  We will learn about the native Maya that live there, and find out about how the Spanish conquistador, Hernan Cortes, changed the future of the country. We will also look at the country's landscape and compare it to our own. In Science we will be identifying everyday materials and thinking about their properties and uses.  Find out more about our activities this term from our overview below.

CHRISTMAS THROUGH THE KEYHOLE

On the 12th December all the Year 2 children were treated to a special event at All Saints' Church.

'He was a real baby, but not the real Jesus. 'His mummy was holding him for real but she wasn't Mary ... was she?' 'I made Jesus smile.'

5% - The stable & Inkeeper

'The shepherd made me jump, he was right there but I didn't see him.', 'There was a real King and he was like a giant.' 'The shepherd told us that there was a bright light from an angel, it was a message from Heaven.' 'I know he wasn't a real Inkeeper because he comes to our school for 'Open The Book, I seen him before.' 'The Inkeeper was very helpful because he showed us where Jesus was.'

  

5% - The 'people who showed us everything.'

'She was very nice to us and kind too.' 'He knew everything about all of it.' 'They made sure everyone got to say something and got their gifts at each place.'

5% - The biscuits and windows

'I think my biscuit will be delicious because she gave me lots of sprinkles to go on my icing.' 'Did you know the biscuit was like a keyhole, it was, like the keyhole we detected through, you know.' 'If you put your window up it will  shine like the ones in the church.'

  

WOW Day - Famous people from History

As part of their homework, the children were challenged to research a famous person from History and come to school dressed as that person. All children made a great effort and we had a super day sharing all our Historical knowledge. Can you work out who we are?

Term 2

This term our topic focus will be Exploring History.  We will be thinking about significant events from the past including The Gunpowder plot and The Great Fire of London, and discover how they impacted how we live our lives today. WOW Day - Survival

To kick off our first topic, Year 2 spent the day learning how to Survive in the woods. We had great fun exploring activities such as cleaning water and building shelters. Check out our photos to see more from our day.
